Tidal Alchemy takes its form from the tidal inlets and oyster beds of the Fal Estuary in Cornwall. Layered surfaces suggest eroded rock and estuarine silt, while tin rises in relief and holds the light.
Fine particles of cassiterite, hand collected from the Cornish coast, are worked into each painting. The mineral formed in association with Cornish granite some 280 million years ago, and Cornish tin has been valued by humankind for some four thousand years. Phoenician traders are said to have journeyed to these shores in pursuit of it. Research points to an earlier trade still, late Bronze Age tin ingots found at Mediterranean sites, many in shipwrecks, appear to have come from Cornwall and Devon. It is an unusual provenance for a painting and one that ties the work directly to the place it draws from.

Fifteen years of practice brings what material alone cannot. The understanding of how these surfaces behave. How depth accumulates. How stillness is arrived at rather than decided.
These paintings move with the room, shifting with the season and the hour. Alive to the light, they hold more in the surface than the eye sees at first, deepening with each year they are lived with.
